Daily Itinerary
Day 1 September 29 - Departure from the USA
Depart San Francisco on flight UA507 at 4:30 PM.
Day 2 September 30 - Arrival in Rome: St. Paul Outside the Walls
Arrive in Rome at 1:20 PM. Upon arrival, meet your English-speaking Tour Manager and board the motor coach. Our first stop will be the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, where we will walk through the first Holy Door of our Jubilee Year Pilgrimage and celebrate Mass. Emperor Constantine originally founded the Basilica in the 4th century, and it is the great Apostle Paul’s burial site. Continue to the hotel for check-in, dinner, and overnight.
Day 3 October 1 - Papal Audience, Basilica of St. Peter
Early morning wake-up call for our visit to the Vatican City. We will attend the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square with Pope Francis. After a break for lunch, we will head to Castel Sant’Angelo. Our group will receive a light symbolic cross to carry in procession along Via della Conciliazione to St. Peter’s Basilica. Upon entering the fourth Holy Door of our pilgrimage, we will have time to explore the Basilica, the largest church in Christendom, built on the site where St. Peter, the first Pope, was martyred. Here, we will view Michelangelo’s Pietà and pray at the tombs of St. Peter and Pope St. John Paul II. The afternoon will be spent in St. Peter’s Square before returning to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 October 2 - St. John Lateran, Holy Stairs, Basilica of St. Mary Major, Baroque Square
After breakfast, we will visit the Basilica of St. Mary Major, walking through the second Holy Door of our pilgrimage. This Basilica is one of the oldest and most important shrines dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Next, we will visit the Basilica of St. John Lateran, walking through the third Holy Door. This Basilica is the seat of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) and houses magnificent artwork and wood from the table used at the Last Supper. We will then proceed to the Shrine of the Holy Stairs, the steps that led to the praetorium of the Roman Procurator Pontius Pilate. After lunch, our afternoon tour will include the beautiful monuments of Baroque Rome, including Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps. There will be time at leisure to shop before returning to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 October 3 - Rome, Montecassino, San Giovanni Rotondo
After breakfast, we will drive south for approximately 2 hours to reach Montecassino, where we will visit the Abbey. We will celebrate Mass at the chapel where Saint Benedict and his sister, St. Scholastica, are buried. Our guided tour will also include the Abbey’s museum. After lunch, we will continue our journey to San Giovanni Rotondo. Check-in at the hotel, followed by dinner and overnight.
Day 6 October 4 - San Giovanni Rotondo, St. Michael’s Cave
This morning is dedicated to Saint Padre Pio. We will honor his legacy by visiting his tomb, cell, confessional, and the Capuchin Monastery of Our Lady of Grace, where we will celebrate Mass. We will also see the new Church of Santa Maria, Delle Grazie, and the Home for the Relief of Suffering. We will visit the Grotto of St. Michael the Archangel in the afternoon. Overnight in San Giovanni Rotondo.
Day 7 October 5 - Lanciano, Loreto, Assisi
After breakfast, we check out and drive to Lanciano, where we will visit the Church of St. Francis, the site of the Eucharistic Miracle that occurred in the 8th century. We will celebrate Mass here. After lunch, we continue our journey to Assisi, stopping in Loreto to see the Holy House of Nazareth, a site traditionally believed to have been transported by angels. We will celebrate Mass and visit the shrine before continuing to Assisi. Check-in at the hotel, followed by dinner and overnight.
Day 8 October 6 - Assisi, San Carlo Acutis
After breakfast, we will visit Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis. We will begin with the Basilica of St. Clare to see her tomb and the Cross of San Damiano, the cross that spoke to St. Francis. We will then visit the Santuario Della Spogliazione, where the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutis is located. Carlo was the first millennial to be declared Blessed and deeply loved the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Next, we will visit the Basilica of St. Francis, where we will explore both the upper and lower parts of the Basilica, including the tomb of St. Francis and celebrate Mass. After lunch, we will visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, home to the Porziuncola Chapel, where St. Francis founded the Franciscan Order. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 9 October 7 - Assisi, Orvieto, Castel Gandolfo
We depart Assisi early this morning and drive approximately two hours to Orvieto, where we will visit the Gothic Cathedral, home to the Eucharistic Miracle of Orvieto. This miracle inspired the establishment of the Feast of Corpus Christi and led St. Thomas Aquinas to compose the famous hymn “Tantum Ergo.” After lunch, we will continue to Castel Gandolfo, celebrating our farewell dinner at a hotel overlooking the lake.
Day 10 October 8 - Departure
In the morning, transfer to Rome’s airport. Depart on flight UA506 at 3:40 PM, arriving in San Francisco at 7:15 PM.
